CrossFit Tips For Beginners: 5 Things You Need In Your Gym Bag
If you are new to CrossFit and just starting your journey you are likely thinking…what the heck is all this gear that everyone is wearing, and what do I NEED to do “this CrossFit thing” right.
Well sista (or brotha), you have 100% came to the right place to find out.
oh hey! My name is Erin & I’m a CrossFit Box Owner from Toronto, Canada and I am also “not your average dreamer”.
For years, (like EONS) I was stuck in a corporate job that I HATED. I also spent all my waking “free” hours side hustling my main love; which is fitness.
After realizing that having to medicate myself to get through my work days (ya, no thanks - don’t sign me up for that), was something I could no longer do, soin 2016 my husband and I opened our very own CrossFit in Toronto, Canada and, well, that was the time “corporate Erin” officially retired and I have never looked back. (Unless for a little giggle or two lolol).
This experience has totally changed my life, my mindset and it has allowed me to coach, and mentor a sh#t ton of people into becoming better athletes (and people) via a sport we all love….CrossFit.
This following list of “must haves” is a summary of all my athletes “favs” and will 100% take your CrossFit game to the next level.

CROSSFIT TIPS FOR BEGINNERS: 5 THINGS YOU NEED IN YOUR GYM BAG
1. THE RIGHT SHOES
which in the CrossFit World are; Reebok Nanos or Nike Metcons.
Grabbing a pair of these shoes will 100% positively affect your workouts (wods). They are designed specifically so that you can cross-train (jump rope, climb rope, box jump etc), and they are perfectly for lifitng.
The soles of the shoes are intentionally flat, and this is exactly what you need long term to ground your heels in your lifts, which will help you to develop proper ankle mobility long term…which is ERRYTHANG.
#protip - if you have wider feet than I have found that the Reebok Nanos are more comfortable and if your foot is more slender than the Nike Metcons may be a better choice.
Either way, grabbing a pair of these is a must! Plus. There are some pretty dope styles so #win
2. KNEE SLEEVES
These may not be the cutest things you have ever seen, but once you buy a pair you will see that they help a ton.
Knee sleeves help to warm the joints prior to heavy movements
Create a slight cushion when squatting below parallel
And I also use them for burpees, walking lunges, and even to cover my shin during rope climbs.
It could be tempting to purchase cheaper versions, but I highly recommend the Rehband version as both myself and my husband have had ours for 3-4 years. Sometimes cheaper is not better.
3. A PROPER JUMP ROPE
At some point in your CrossFit journey you will want to master “dubs” (double unders), and in order to get good at them, and make your move most efficient, a proper rope is a necessity.
A good quality rope will turn over with less effort, should be lighter so that requires minimal exertion during your skips (this will help you transition with better energy into the next exercise in the workout), AND will help with not ever having to worry about if the rope that suits your best is available when you get to the gym.
4. A HAND CARE KIT
This will help reduce callouses & tearing during gymnastics work
There is no getting around getting weight lifting callouses. In fact, after a while they will become your secret “badge of honor”.
5. WRIST WRAPS
The majority of people when starting CrossFit struggle with wrist pain. This is due to weak ligaments and poor mobility in a ton of places, and although wrist wraps won’t solve this issue, they sure as heck will help you to “ride the beginner pain wave”. Then when your flexibility and movement matures, you can decide whether to continue to use them in your lifts or not.
When choosing there are two main types, soft (thin material) or a little thicker. I personally like the thicker ones and use them in all of my overhead work.
